Cloth diapers can accumulate bacteria, limescale, and soap residue over time, which can lead to unpleasant odors. If you find that your diapers start to smell, especially when they get wet, it may be time for a thorough cleaning – often called “stripping”.

Why does the smell occur?

Buildup of limescale from hard water

Soap residue from detergent

Insufficient washing, where dirt and ammonia are not properly rinsed out

Step-by-step guide to stripping inserts

1. Prepare a tub of warm water

Fill a baby bathtub or a large tub with very hot water.

Add 1-2 dl baking soda depending on the number of inserts.

2. Leave the inserts to soak

Soak all inserts in the solution overnight.

3. Wash at high temperature

After soaking, the inserts should be washed at 90°C. Diaper covers must not be washed at 90°C.

Avoid including wetbags in this wash, as they can prevent optimal water circulation.

4. Run an extra rinse

It is important to ensure that there is no residue of baking soda or dirt left.

Prevention of odor

Rinse inserts from night-time cloth diapers in cold water immediately after use to minimize ammonia buildup.

Avoid fabric softener, as it reduces absorbency.

Adjust the detergent dosage according to your water hardness to avoid soap residue.

Clean the washing machine regularly to prevent bacterial buildup.

Air drying in sunlight is recommended, as the sun’s UV rays have a natural disinfecting effect.

By following these steps, you ensure that your cloth diapers stay fresh and odor-free while also extending their lifespan.
