We recommend that a cloth diaper is changed every two hours.

We recommend that a cloth diaper is changed every two hours. In this way, you avoid your child having urine against the skin for long periods of time with the risk of a red bottom.

The more suction there is in the cloth diaper, the less wet it will be during a pee tear. If there is only one insert in the diaper, it will immediately get wet from front to back. If, on the other hand, the diaper has many layers of suction, a pee tear will be centered where the pee is used. So the number of inserts also plays an important role in terms of how often the diaper needs to be changed.

Of course, a diaper should always be changed as soon as there is stool in it.

The transition phase from disposable to cloth diaper

If you have just started using cloth diapers and have previously used disposable diapers, you should be aware that there may be a transition phase where the diaper needs to be changed extra frequently. Disposable diapers absorb so much that they also suck the moisture from the skin, so the child starts to produce extra moisture to compensate. This means that a cloth diaper gets wet faster in the transition phase and you should expect to change frequently. Maybe every hour for a start and later every two hours as usual with cloth diapers.

Brand new diapers

You should expect that brand new diapers will not achieve the maximum absorbency until the pads have been washed up to 8 times. Therefore, new diapers need to be changed more often than diapers that have been washed many times. Read more in our guide brand new diapers.
